Mercedes is all set to introduce a smaller version of the legendary G-Class in a fully electric version. This electric SUV will be positioned below the current G-Class electric (the G580 with EQ Technology).

Popularly called as “Mercedes Little G” online, this performance SUV is confirmed by Mercedes CEO Ola Kallenius at the 2023 Munich Motor Show.

The Mercedes Little G will be sold alongside the G80 solely as an EV. It will be competing with the likes of Baby Defender, scheduled to launch sometime in 2027.

Mercedes Little G: Design Overview & Branding

Visually, the smaller G-Class SUV will share similar styling of the traditional boxy shaped Defender SUV, however, the small electric SUV will have its own unique character that will help to differentiate it from its traditional counterparts.

The smaller G Class will be having a branding of lowercase ‘g’ in its nameplate. The compact G-Class will showcase a boxy design characterized by flat, nearly vertical surfaces, resulting in a unique aesthetic and a rugged, military-inspired appearance. Its windscreen will have a nearly flat shape and will include a glasshouse element.

The interesting part of the design is that it has a drag coefficient below the 0.44 of the G 580.

Mercedes Little G Interiors

The interiors of Little G will be completely different from the original G-Class models. The interior will likely be similar in look and feel, and will borrow some styling cues from third-generation CLA.

Mercedes Little G Powertrains and Electric Motors

Powering the standard entry-level Little G will be Mercedes new eATS 2.0 electric motors. However, the motors are completely different from the Siemens Valeo motors, already used in Mercedes EVs. The new system is powered by a 2-speed gearbox, for enhanced performance and efficiency.

Mercedes is set to create the Little G using the MB.EA platform, and multiple sources indicate that this electric SUV will feature a sophisticated four-wheel drive system. This innovative configuration is reported to have the ability to replicate the three mechanical differential locks found in the G-Class.

The new entry-level Mercedes Little G will be featuring dedicated driving modes for each terrain so that the user can select the particular driving mode and just drive the SUV without involving the mechanics.

Battery and Performance

The most significant update Mercedes is introducing with the Little G is the adoption of the new MB:EA platform, replacing the ladder-frame chassis found in the larger G-Class models.

The monocoque platform will support 800V electric architecture and a newly developed fifth-generation battery, expected to provide a substantial range of more than 700 Km.
