Honda Cars India has confirmed that they are soon entering the Indian EV space with their inaugural all-electric model, which is set to be introduced in India between the time period of April 2026 and March 2027.
This announcement was made by Vice President of Sales & Marketing at Honda Cars India, Kunal Behl, thus marking an important chapter of the manufacturer as it will be finally entering the fast growing electric segment of the country.
If we look at the market, the key competitors of Honda Motors such as Tata Motors, Hyundai, and Mahindra have already entered the market and have their electric lineup tailored for every consumer. The biggest manufacturers of India such as Maruti Suzuki and Toyota are all set to introduce their first EV in the upcoming 3-5 months.
However, Honda has kept itself limited to hybrid technology, but as it is confirmed, the Japanese manufacturer will be launching its EV by late 2026.
Completely New Model
The company is focusing on an entirely new model instead of making an electric version of their existing petrol lineup. However there were earlier speculations that Honda’s first EV could be the electric version of the Elevate SUV.
Although Honda has not revealed the exact body type of their new EV, it is expected to be positioned against Hyundai Creta Electric, MG ZS EV, and Maruti E-vitara, thus focussing on midsize SUV segment.
Charging Infrastructure & EV Dealership
Honda is also working to expand their charging infrastructure along with the development of their EV products. The Japanese manufacturer is installing high-power DC fast chargers at their dealerships, in order to reduce range anxiety and provide a developed EV ecosystem for its users.
All these changes are expected to take place in the next 8-12 months, thus providing a backbone to their newly introduced EVs.
Market Positioning
Currently, Honda Cars India have a limited model on sale in India, ranging from the City, Amaze, Elevate, and strong-hybrid City e:HEV. If we look at the competition, they provide a diverse range of products with CNG offerings. Honda, on the other hand has shrunken their presence by discontinuing models like Brio, Jazz, Mobilio, and CR-V due to less demand.
But now the company wants to increase its foothold in the EV space by introducing new nameplates in order to strengthen their brand position and expanding its model lineup in the electric segment. Honda is also investing a total amount of 600 crore in the development of their new manufacturing plant for electric two-wheelers, situated near Narasapura plant in Kolar district.
