Tata Motors and Mahindra have emerged as leaders in global EV efficiency rankings, surpassing Tesla and BYD.

Tata Motors and Mahindra have grabbed top positions in a global ranking for the most efficient electric vehicles for 2025, as released by the International Council on Clean Transportation (ICCT). Tata Motors scored an impressive 106 watt-hours per kilometer, followed by Mahindra at 113 Wh/km. 

These two Indian manufacturers have beaten two big auto companies Tesla and BYD, which have secured third and fourth position in this list. 

Global EV Efficiency Rankings 

The list includes 22 of the world’s largest EV manufacturers. These rankings by ICCT are calculated on the basis of whose cars produce less electricity to travel the same distance. The less electricity consumed by an electric car, the higher the rankings of the OEMs. 

In this list, Tata Motors secured the first place followed by Mahindra. This record is one of the biggest milestones for India's electric vehicle industry and could solidify the global rankings of Tata and Mahindra for enhancing their presence in the international markets. 

According to the ICCT, the global average of fuel efficiency is set at 131 Wh/Km. The lower energy consumption per km means that the vehicle consumes less electricity, thus ensuring maximum efficiency by reducing the power consumption and running costs for the users. 

The report also states that models like the Tata Sierra EV and Mahindra BE 6 have been specifically designed to deliver lower energy consumption than providing exceptional performance figures. Thus it ensures that their smaller battery packs provide class-leading efficiency figures. 

The ranking report also showed how Indian manufacturers are focussing more on large SUVs which involves focussing on improving efficiency, affordability and reliability.
