Indian buyers eyeing a seven-seater electric SUV now have far more selection than they ever did. No longer a niche segment, the EV SUV class has delivered offerings such as the Mahindra XEV 9S, and the MG Hector Tomahawk EV's arrival marks a major leap forward in terms of family-focused practicality. And yet, both these SUVs find themselves at a particularly interesting pricing crossover. MG has launched the Hector Tomahawk EV with an introductory price of ₹19.49 lakh, while the Mahindra XEV 9S begins at ₹19.95 lakh (both ex-showroom). 

MG supplies a basic configuration with a 69.2kWh battery and a 517km claim. But Mahindra offers the 59kWh, 70kWh, and 79kWh alternatives to the XEV 9S, each with a greater maximum range (679km MIDC). So which makes more sense in the context of a family purchase? In this article, we've compared the MG Hector Tomahawk EV and Mahindra XEV 9S across multiple criteria in a comprehensive manner to bring out the best and worst options.

MG Hector Tomahawk EV: What's in Store?

As its name suggests, the Hector Tomahawk EV is MG's first model on its new ADAPT architecture. This platform is essentially MG's plan for the future, as it will power not only pure EVs but also HEVs and PHEVs. As a battery-electric vehicle, it features a 69.2kWh battery and a single electric motor. While the India-spec Tomahawk EV makes 204hp and 310Nm. It features MG's Vehicle-to-Home technology that enables the owner to draw on the battery to power a compatible home setup. 

In a clever twist, the Tomahawk EV offers a five-seat and seven-seat configuration, enabling families to switch between the two seating plans on a regular basis. MG's more focused PHEV, on the other hand, only comes in a seven-seat form-factor. MG claims a 2,810mm wheelbase, together with 85% usable floor space. It is worth noting that the Tomahawk's focus on interior space is critical in the three-row SUV segment.

Mahindra XEV 9S: What Sets it Apart?

The XEV 9S is the result of a different strategy, in which a battery electric vehicle was designed from day one on Mahindra's INGLO architecture rather than simply adapting an internal combustion engine model and electrifying it (as MG has done). XEV 9S has three battery options: 59kWh, 70kWh, and 79kWh, with power output ranging from 170kW to 210kW and 380Nm of torque. Its claimed MIDC range is up to 679km with the largest battery. In addition, this Mahindra XEV 9S has a longer highway range, faster acceleration, and greater towing capacity than the MG.

Price: MG Hector Tomahawk EV Has a Small Advantage

This is most likely the factor that many buyers will care about when it comes to purchasing decisions between these two electric SUVs. The MG Hector Tomahawk EV has an MSRP of ₹19.49 lakh with an option of BaaS at ₹13.99 lakhs, making it ₹50,000 cheaper than the XEV 9S's ₹19.95 lakh launch price. While the price range for the XEV 9S was between ₹19.95 lakh and ₹29.45 lakh for the Pack Three Above with a 79kWh battery. On the other hand, one cannot deny the flexibility of the three battery options that come with the XEV 9S compared to the MG's single battery option for the Tomahawk EV.

Range and Battery Winning: Mahindra Has the Clear Edge

When it comes to the EV, range is unquestionably one of the most important aspects. When compared to the MG Hector Tomahawk EV, the XEV 9S has a clear advantage over its rivals in this department since it has a larger battery capacity. The MG Hector Tomahawk EV has a 69.2kWh battery and an EPA-claimed range of 517km. In addition, it supports 7.4kW AC and 90kW DC fast charging, giving owners a 30-80% charge time of approximately 35 minutes.

The XEV 9S, on the other hand, comes with three different battery sizes: 59kWh, 70kWh, and 79kWh. While the 59kWh battery provides a 521km MIDC range and 600km for the 70kWh battery, the 79kWh configuration provides a massive 679km MIDC range. Besides, the XEV 9S comes with a 180kW DC fast-charging capability. As a result, the 79kWh battery can be charged from 20% to 80% in just 20 minutes when using a Level 3 DC fast-charging station.

Although the MG and Mahindra's claimed ranges can't be compared directly due to varying MIDC and real-world driving conditions, it doesn't diminish the fact that, on paper, the XEV 9S has a clear edge on the MG.

Performance: XEV 9S Is More Powerful

As far as performance goes, the MG Hector Tomahawk's 204hp and 310Nm motor will suffice for most urban and motorway commutes. That said, electric motors have a near-instant torque delivery curve, making the MG Tomahawk EV quick and brisk on the go. The power and torque figures of the XEV 9S, on the other hand, are considerably more appealing, with the top-spec 79kWh model delivering 210kW (about 286hp) and 380Nm. 

In addition, it can accelerate from 0-100km/h in just 7.0 seconds and has a top speed of 202km/h. XEV 9S is a rear-wheel-drive vehicle, and it also has an 180kW motor (versus 90kW for the MG). While straight acceleration figures may not be a priority for many three-row SUV buyers, the extra shove on tap can make a noticeable difference on the highway.

Space and Seven-Seat Practicality

Given the target buyer for both these electric SUVs is most likely a family, we believe space would be a primary consideration for these buyers. While the Tomahawk EV has a 2,810mm wheelbase, it also has a 368mm second-row seat height, compared to 380mm for the XEV 9S. MG Hector Tomahawk has five and seven-seat configurations as standard; on the flip side, MG only offers the Tomahawk PHEV in a seven-seat spec. 

Speaking of flexibility, MG claims its new ADAPT platform delivers 85 percent floor space utilization - ideal for legroom and headroom, especially in the second and third row in a seven-seat specification. On the other end, Mahindra's XEV 9S has a wheelbase of 2762mm; it has a similar amount of legroom and headroom in the second and third rows. Moreover, Mahindra has equipped the XEV 9S with a sliding second row, which makes it simpler to access the back seats or increase the cargo space by folding the second- and third-row seats.

While MG offers a generous 610 litres of boot space in the five-seat configuration, Mahindra offers an incredible 527 litres of space with the third row folded. Since MG's five-seat option comes with the fold-down third row, this spec cannot be compared directly with the XEV 9S's seven-seat configuration.

Firstly, the Tomahawk EV has a large 39.6cm multimedia touch screen with Gen AI entertainment system and karaoke. The seven-seat model has a spacious back seat with an advanced entertainment system that uses a 360-degree camera, a panoramic sunroof, wireless connectivity, wireless charging, and i-Swipe gesture control. Some notable features include Pet Mode, Valet Mode, Camp Mode, and Energise Mode. MG has also equipped the Tomahawk EV with advanced driver-assistance systems and infotainment technologies. 

The XEV 9S, on the other hand, has a technology suite comprising three 31.24cm screens, a 16-speaker Harman Kardon audio system with Dolby Atmos sound, and wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. It also has an in-built 5G connectivity and an augmented reality head-up display. The vehicle also comes with AutoPark Assist and connected car infotainment technologies. Higher variants of the XEV 9S boast Level 2+ Advanced Driver-Assistance Systems with five radar sensors and one camera, driver drowsiness detection, 360-degree camera, and several other technologies that enhance the driving experience.

Safety: Both SUVs Prioritize Vehicle Safety

With regard to the Tomahawk EV, it has advanced driver-assisted technologies and a range of passive safety features. Some of its most notable safety features are the driver alertness monitoring camera, 360-degree cameras, blind-spot monitoring, automated emergency braking, and many more. The battery pack that powers the MG Hector Tomahawk uses the MAGIC battery with advanced thermal management along with smart battery management in every Tomahawk model. 

In terms of the XEV 9S, it has standard and optional advanced driver-assisted technologies, including 360-degree cameras, blind spot monitoring, automated emergency braking, and driver attention detection. Furthermore, it comes with up to seven airbags, including a driver's knee airbag on higher trims. The car also has a Level+ 2 Advanced Driver-Assistance System with five radar sensors, one camera, and driver monitoring on higher trims.

Here is how MG Hector Tomahawk EV and the XEV 9S compare with regards to charging. Both MG Hector Tomahawk and Mahindra XEV 9S support Level 1 AC wall charging and Level 2 DC fast-charging. They have Level-2 DC fast chargers, which enable owners to charge their cars 5x faster (approximately 35 mins for 30-80% SOC) compared to Level 1 chargers. 

Specifically, the MG Hector Tomahawk EV has a 7.4 kW AC and 90 kW DC Fast Charging. In terms of battery range, a Tomahawk owner can benefit from an ultra-long highway range of up to 517km per charge with the vehicle's claimed range. In comparison, the Mahindra XEV 9S has three battery variants (59 kWh, 70 kWh, and 79 kWh), with the top variant providing an extended range of up to 679 km. 

Furthermore, the 79 kWh battery supports a 180 kW DC fast charge, and the 70kWh variant supports a 160 kW DC fast charge. When using a 180 kW DC fast charger, the 79 kWh battery can be charged from 20% to 80% in just 20 minutes. Therefore, while the MG and Mahindra Tomahawk have comparable charging capabilities, the XEV 9S has a slight edge when considering its longer claimed range.
