Ather Energy has finally entered into the budget segment with the launch of the Ather Konarc, a family-oriented electric scooter at the starting price of just Rs 99,999. Ather was known for manufacturing exceptional sports electric scooters specifically for performance enthusiasts, but now the company is transitioning to a new dimension.

However, the interesting question that arises is: Can this metal body budget electric scooter dethrone the budget champions? Let’s understand.

Breaking the Premium Mold

The Ather Konarc is a big step towards changing the definition of how an Indian household electric scooter looks like. It features aggressive styling for a traditional, yet spacious family electric scooter. The Ather Konarc is also the first electric scooter to come with a steel chassis integrated with full metal body panels

This brings robustness and premium quality that the Indian consumers have always demanded, as compared to the fiber and plastic body of its competitors.

Smart Tech Meets Everyday Practicality

The Ather Konarc is also the first scooter to be underpinned by the brand's budget EL Platform. The Konarc also seamlessly integrates technology at budget price as it comes with various IDC range options ranging from 100 km and eventually crossing more than 200 Km.

Ather has also not sacrificed practicality as it offers spacious 31-litre boot and first-in-segment combined charging technology. The scooter also brings revolutionary technology such as AirWalk Assist, AutoHold, and a keyless MagicKey system down to the masses.

Shaking Up Market Dynamics and Subsidies

Ather has initially introduced the base S 100 variant under the 1 lakh price segment and has provided everything into the mass-market two-wheeler EV segment. It now directly competes with segment leaders with high-volumes like the TVS iQube, Bajaj Chetak, and Ola’s cost-effective portfolio.

Pricing Strategy: In order to compete with the stiff competition with rivals, Ather has smartly introduced the Konarc range under the 1 lakh price bracket in order to make the Konarc highly lucrative to sales and generate demand for the new scooter in this segment.

Ather has also focussed on buyer affordability as India is a price sensitive market, thus effectively positioning the final on-road price close to the conventional ICE petrol scooters, without relying on central government subsidies and benefits.

The Final Verdict

Ather has not just launched the budget scooter to garner majority of the sales in the budget segment but provided segment first features like high quality metal body, practicality, at a highly effective price of Rs 99,999. The Konarc is set to disrupt the budget EV segment by aiming for the commuter EV throne.
