Bentley's inaugural EV features a drumbeat soundtrack that emulates the sound of an engine.

Bentley is all set to reveal its first electric performance-oriented electric car, the Torcal. As EVs are known for their smoothness and silent traits, Bentley is going a different way by installing a traditional combustion engine voice as the brand has designed the sound track in order to make it feel like driving a signature Bentley.

Bentley has created a specific ‘Bentley Dynamic Symphony’, which is an exclusive sound crafted from the company’s natural engine sounds performed with real instruments.

Engine History brought this Idea 

This idea originated through Bentley’s long-term association with powerful internal combustion engines. Over the years, the brand has used everything from supercharged engines in the 1930s to the 6.5 litre V8 and the W12. 

This long lasting legacy gave a starting point for this project as the sound of the engine is like an emotional feeling ignited by pressing the acceleration. The development team analysed the V8 engine in a studio setting. Instead of just focussing on the tone of the engine, their studies found a rhythm which played an important role in how a sound is felt to the listener.

Drummer helped in the Development 

Bentley also tried a unique experiment where they used parabolic speakers. On one side, a Bentley V8 sound was played and on the other side, a drummer performed. As the team moved between the two sound sources, they found that the sound was the same in energy, cadence and emotional impact. 

The test also concluded that combustion engines cannot perform in a uniform manner. The team also notices various imperfections in the way the sound was produced. As per Bentley, these variations helped in making the sound that resonates with people so strongly. 

Sound Linked as per Driver 

The soundtrack reacts to the driver’s input to the acceleration just like in a normal ICE car. According to Bentley, the sound just transforms the way the car is driven which makes the experience more engaging. For Bentley, Toral will open new doors towards electric mobility. This attempt is also made to save the company’s emotional prestige and presents it with a new face. 

Thus by utilising musicians, the company is aiming to provide the same legendary voice to their EVs that feels familiar but belongs to a new mobility.
