Our AllAboutEVs team did an ownership review of the BYD Sealion 7 to find out whether this performance oriented electric SUV is worth justifying your price or not. The owner, Mr Molly is a hardcore overlander who has driven across 56 countries and owns a total of eight luxury cars in his garage. 

His latest purchase is BYD Sealion 7 Performance AWD and has clocked 9,000 Km. He shed a light on the performance, features and harsh realities of living with this beast. 

Supercar Performance in a SUV Body

If you think electric cars are dull yet boring, the Sealion 7 is here to rewrite the history of electric cars as it comes powered with a substantial 82 kWh battery pack with dual motors churning out a massive 690 Nm of peak torque. Believe us, this car is an absolute rocket!!

POWER: The owner confidently compared its thrilling performance to the cars of supercar territory like the Porsche 911 and Lamborghini Urus. The company claims a 0-100 km/hr of 4.5 seconds, but according to Mr Molly, it can comfortably achieve it in just 4 seconds. Wanna hear some more mind blowing stuff? The owner even claimed that it can go from 0 to a full 200  km/hr in just 21 seconds. 

Despite being a luxury family oriented car, it can also change its role to a full performance oriented SUV. He even tested its AWD capabilities on a steep 32-degree hill climb, as the car crawled up effortlessly with the loads of torque available. 

BYD Sealion 7 Premium Features & Fortuner-Beating Space

On the inside, the Sealion 7 feels very premium as the owner expressed that the cabin is extremely comfortable yet spacious and is actually longer and wider than big SUVs like Toyota Fortuner. The interiors are crafted with pure Nappa leather, ventilated seats, and elegant Alcantara trims along the dashboard. 

The storage is also practical which also gets a massive cavern underneath the center console and can house a big 55-litre hydraulic frunk (Front Trunk). 

Imp Owner TIP: The car does not provide any spare tyre, but only a puncture repair kit. If you are planning for a long highway trip, then the owner suggested purchasing a dedicated spare wheel and jack to accommodate in the boot. 

BYD Sealion 7 Real Range & Battery Economics 

Let's talk about how much it cost? The owner purchased the Sealion 7 at Rs 64 lakhs in Bangalore (Includes a Rs 10 lakh EV Tax). However, he made smart savings on insurance, bypassing the dealership's Rs 1.95 lakh rupee quote and securing it externally for just Rs 1.2 lakhs. 

The Day-to-Day costs are impressive, as previously the owner was spending up to Rs 2,600 daily on diesel, but now his commuting has severely dropped to just Rs 300. In City traffic, the EV is providing a highly efficient 7 km per kWh. However, even pushing on the highways and relying heavily on DC fast chargers, the running cost was only Rs 3.55 / Km. 

BYD Sealion 7 Service Experience: What issues did the owner face? 

Is it a perfect EV? Almost, as the owner was completely in love with the car’s sporty dynamics, performance, and luxurious build quality, but he also faced various issues. 

He explicitly showed his dissatisfaction with the service as he was in absolute awe of the vehicle and its overall engineering, but the after-sales support has been a headache. Thus it is a harsh reminder that while BYD builds exceptional electric cars, the service network needs some serious rework in order to match the premium pricing.

After gaining the insights from the owner, we came to the conclusion that BYD Sealion 7 is a pinnacle of modern EV engineering that gives you a supercar type feel, massive cost savings and premium luxury. Just be prepared for some issues from the developing service network.
