Citroen had announced that they will be introducing the electric version of their Aircross SUV, following the launch of the petrol-powered SUV, which was introduced last year. However, it’s been almost two years since the launch but the company has not shed any light about the electric version.

At the launch of Basalt X, the CEO and Managing Director of Stellantis India confirmed that they are thinking of bringing the EV to India. He further added, “The EVs will be developed on the company’s C-cubed platform and are currently in the development stage. We will be launching the EVs, when there is a high demand in the market for EVs.”

The C-cubed platform is designed with a future vision and can accommodate all-electric powertrains and the first car made on this platform, the Citroen was the first choice from the manufacturers to make a debut in Indian EV space with their all-electric eC3, within the six months of launching the petrol C3.

However looking at the recent market conditions, Citroen has delayed the launch of its electric cars as the company is focussing on updating their ICE cars lineup, as the ICE cars have not generated the demand Citroen had projected, and that’s why they have put their EV plans on hold.

The support for Hybrids.

However the interesting part in the picture here is that Hazella has also expressed that their hybrid plans are also open. He added that, “Our 1.2 litre petrol engine is compatible with advanced hybrid technology, so we could explore all the possibilities in this area as well.”

However, this point is worth considering as Citroen is analysing the Indian market and has witnessed the strategy of Maruti and Toyota’s Hybrid technology they are utilizing in their cars and the amount of  impressive demand they are generating. There is also a significant tax reduction on hybrids with GST reforms from the Indian government, so it could be priced competitively attracting more users.

Thus the effective optimization of Hybrid technology could also give a wider range of powertrain options, thus increasing its overall appeal. However, the company has not revealed the specific launch timeline for its EVs.
