Have you ever wondered about an EV powered with a petrol engine, but still drives seamlessly like an EV? This is soon going to be a reality as Faraday Future has just filed for an innovative new US patent that will disrupt the EV industry. Let’s explain the working of this range extending system.

How does the Range-Extending System Work?

Faraday Future’s new patent, which is officially defined as “Range Extending Hybrid Transmission System” which is a highly efficient powertrain. In simple terms, in this powertrain, the petrol engine, generator, electric motor, and wheels are not locked into a conventional setup.

Instead, the system adapts while moving, as the petrol engine can act purely as a generator to charge up the batteries and allow the electric motors to send power to the wheels. However, according to the situation, the combustion engine and batteries can combine to power the vehicle together.

When will it come to the Roads?

While the reliability of extended range is quite innovative, currently it's merely a patent and not in the final stage of production. According to Faraday Future, the future vehicle deliveries will be totally dependent on financing to bring this technology to mainstream adoption.

The industry is embracing electric mobility as its primary source of transportation, or are range extenders the next big revolution? Only time will tell.
