At the recent Investors meet, Hyundai showed a glimpse of its upcoming electric cars for the Indian market till FY2030, and has confirmed about the introduction of an all-new EV in the budget of 10 lakhs (ex-showroom) price bracket.
According to Hyundai, it will be a sub-compact EV which will be manufactured in-house to give a tough competition in the small SUV segment, which is most probably the sub-4m range, going against the likes of Tata Punch EV and Tata Nexon EV.
Hyundai Upcoming EV Details
However, the company has not revealed the exact design details of their upcoming SUV, it is expected that the upcoming SUV will be powered with the option of two battery packs such as the Standard and Long Range models in order to compete in the highly competitive small compact SUV segment, which is basically under 4 meters in length.
The upcoming SUV is also expected to come with Level 2 ADAS which is already seen on many Hyundai cars, and an additional infotainment system with OTA (over-the-air) update functionality. Hyundai will be also engineering the upcoming EV with robust body structure for enhanced performance and safety.
Why another Mass Segment EV?
This upcoming EV will be the second mass market EV from the Korean manufacturer for the Indian market and will be positioned below the Hyundai Creta Electric. If we currently analyse the mass market EV space, Hyundai has limited options and the segment is majorly dominated by Tata EVs.
On the other hand, Creta Electric is the only offering by the company which is positioned in this segment, as the Ioniq 5 targets the premium segment of consumers. Thus bringing a completely new mass market electric car in the sub-compact EV segment could be a smart decision for the company and will eventually help Hyundai solidify its position in the small EV segment.
Expected Launch
Hyundai’s upcoming sub-compact SUV is expected to launch sometime in 2026 and it will be directly competing with prime contenders of the sub-compact EV segment such as Tata Nexon EV, Mahindra XUV 400 EV, and Tata Punch EV.
