An explosive fire accident took place in Indore early Wednesday morning while charging an Electric Vehicle (EV) claiming 7 innocent lives. The incident occurred near Bengali Square in the Tilak Nagar area. According to initial reports, the fire broke out due to suspected short circuit, when the EV charging point suffered a massive blaze.

According to early reports, a Punch EV was plugged in for overnight charging just outside the residence of the Pugalia family. At around 4 AM, a suspended short circuit led to a massive explosion at the charging point due to which the vehicle was set on fire.

The flames rapidly spread from the car to the three-storey building, trapping the people inside with a massive fire outbreak and leaving a very little time to react. The situation worsened further due to the presence of multiple LPG cylinders stored in the house, as several cylinders exploded in this fire, which further caused structural damage and collapse of the building.

Thus the powerful fire outbreak and dense smoke turned the home into a death trap. As per authorities, there were a lot of flammable materials including polymer-related substances stored inside the house, which may have expanded the fire.

The District Collector, Shivam Verma confirmed that the fire spread during early hours of 3:30 Am and 4:30 Am and soon a detailed investigation will be done. This incident has raised several eyebrows about EV charging practices at home, especially in those places where there is a lack of electrical safety and ventilation.

EV Charging Safety Tips: How to prevent such accidents?

1. Use Company-Certified Charging Equipment only

  • Always use manufacturer-approved chargers and avoid third-party or low-quality charging equipment, which are not certified by the company and are more prone to short circuits.

2. Install Dedicated Electrical Circuits

  • While EVs are designed for overnight charging, loose wiring and uncertified setups increase the risk of fire accidents. Always ensure that your system is professionally installed.

3. Keep Charging Area away from Flammable Materials

  • Never store LPG cylinders, chemicals and highly combustible materials near charging points or parked vehicles.

4. Regular Inspections and Periodic Maintenance

  • Keep proper maintenance of wiring, sockets, and connectors for wear, overheating or damage as preventive maintenance can protect you from major failures.
