Mercedes-Benz is all set to introduce the facelifted S-Class in India with its first-ever plug-in hybrid (PHEV) model, which will debut with the S 450e integrated with the EQ Hybrid technology. Though they are equipped with a similar model configuration, the S 450e hybrid will provide more performance with its all-electric driving capabilities.

The S 450 is powered with a 48V mild-hybrid system that can provide a temporary boost of power and torque, specifically during hard acceleration. However, the S 450e will come with a plug-in hybrid system equipped with a 22 kWh battery which will be alternating between electric and combustion power during driving.

The 22 kWh battery pack can only provide 100 km of electric range and can be charged via a plug. This means buyers can also use the car primarily as an EV, especially for urban commutes, with a backing of a petrol engine for longer highway journeys.

For Mercedes, it will also increase the accessibility for consumers as those who are interested in electric mobility can look for the S-Class PHEV as a secondary alternative.

Mercedes S-Class PHEV to be manufactured at Chakan

Currently, Mercedes-Benz India is assembling various models like the Long-Wheelbase S-Class, Maybach S-Class, and the EQS electric sedan. Thus Mercedes wants to keep the prices for the PHEV models in check and that’s why they could look to assemble the S 450e here also. As Hybrids are gaining popularity in India, it is a perfect time for the company to introduce this powertrain.
