Upcoming Hyundai Electric SUV Spied in Chennai: Range, Specs & Tata Punch EV Rival
Hyundai’s sub-4 meter compact EV has been spied testing at the roads of Chennai. As the demand for highly affordable, localised EVs is rising, Hyundai is all set to bring new EV launches in India in 2027. Let’s break down exactly what these fresh spy shots reveal and the expected launch timeline for the EV.
The ‘Teaser’ Camouflage: Taking inspiration from Bayon?
Codenamed as HE1i, The latest test version spotted in Chennai was quite different from the standard test mules integrated with heavy fabric. There was a white background around the roof rails and the rear side-window pillars. It also featured oversized red and black lettering.
Hyundai clearly wants to introduce its upcoming EV just like Bayon, as it also featured bold slogans like “Bring It On” “Innovation” and “Expression.” However, only the fragments of letters were visible on the upcoming EV, this suggests that Hyundai is preparing its official teaser campaign in the coming weeks.

A Tech-Forward Cabin
The upcoming EV from Hyundai will be the first car from the brand to be equipped with the new Pleos Connect next-generation infotainment system. Apart from this, Hyundai will be also providing a range of features, depending on the variant. This includes:
- 360-Degree Parking Camera
- Level 2 ADAS (Advanced Driver Assistance Systems)
- Sunroof
- Ventilated Front Seats
Hyundai E-GMP Platform & Range
The upcoming compact SUV is expected to be underpinned by Hyundai’s highly acclaimed E-GMP (K) architecture. The company will be manufacturing these vehicles directly at their Chennai plant with a high level of localisation. With this, Hyundai will be competitively pricing its upcoming EV.

Hyundai has not disclosed the exact technical specifications regarding its upcoming EV, but expect it to be powered between 40 kWh to 50 kWh, providing a claimed driving range of around 450 Km on a single charge.
Hyundai Upcoming EV Expected Launch
The Hyundai HE1i electric SUV is expected to make its grand debut at the Bharat Auto Expo in February 2027. With a strong range figure, premium tech features, and aggressive pricing, Hyundai’s upcoming EV could give a solid competition to Tata Punch EV.
