India has registered more than 30,051 sales in the month of August 2026, which is a significant increase by up to 53.1% from 19,629 units a year earlier. However, three companies have shown outstanding growth with different growth projections.

  • Tata has shown a significant growth of 63.2% year-on-year (YoY)
  • Mahindra has recorded an impressive 56.2% YoY growth.
  • Vinfast has built a 7.3% market share in less than a year after entering the market.

Together, the three companies have boosted the EV sector by registering more than 21,821 EVs in August, which is 72.6% of the entire EV market for the month. Tata Motors has also single handedly accounted for 13,158 registrations, Mahindra at 6,464 & Vinfast 2,199.

However, in the case of Vinfast, there is no previous year data as Vinfast entered late, so its growth cannot be measured year-on-year like Tata and Mahindra. The August registrations are 43.5% higher than July, which makes it the fastest growing company during the month.

Tata Motors Boosted the Indian EV Industry

  • Tata is clearly dominating the Indian EV market as the registrations have been increased from 8,064 to 13,158, which is an increase of 5,094 cars. The market share has improved 41.1% to 43.8%, as several new competitors have entered.
  • Nexon EV has accounted for the majority of sales, while the Punch EV, Tiago EV, Curvv EV, Harrier EV, and the new Sierra EV have provided more opportunity for the company to attract buyers.

Mahindra has recorded 6,000-Plus Sales

  • Mahindra has successfully sold 6,464 EVs in August, which is significantly higher than 4,139 EVs sold earlier. This accounts for 56.2% increase, which results in a slight increase of 21.5% market share, keeping it in second place.

  • The biggest change is the expanded lineup of the company as the BE 6, XEV 9e and three-row XEV 9S have attracted a huge volume of sales.

Vinfast has Grabbed 4th Spot

  • In comparison, Vinfast’s 2,199 registrations are quite smaller than Tata, Mahindra and MG, but its growth trajectory has shown a massive spike. The company rose 43.5% from July’s 1,532 units and has secured fourth place, ahead of Maruti Suzuki.
  • The Limo Green commercial MPV has contributed 46% of VinFast’s April-June Volume, which means that the growth is not just coming only from the private buyers, but from premium electric SUVs.
