VinFast is changing its India strategy. Instead of primarily relying on global electric car models adapted for the Indian market, the Vietnamese EV maker is working on two new electric vehicles that are specifically designed for the country. Internally known as VF X and VF Y, the two models are in the early development stage. This development is notable because VinFast recently suspended plans to manufacture its existing VF 3, VF 6 and VF 7 models in India after finding it difficult to achieve the targeted cost levels.

The company wants to incorporate Indian suppliers much earlier in the development process and create products that can be better aligned with local pricing and customer requirements. It is important to note that VinFast has not officially revealed the final design, battery specifications, range, power output, launch date or production specifications of the VF X and VF Y. Considering the latest updates, we have discussed everything we know about VinFast VF X & VF Y India-specific EVs.

Why Is VinFast Developing India-Specific EVs?

The decision comes after VinFast experienced a major challenge with the economics of producing its existing global EVs in India. In July 2026, the company suspended plans to manufacture the VF 3, VF 6 and VF 7 in India after having determined that it would not be able to reduce their costs enough to achieve its targeted selling prices. The VF 6 and VF 7 continue to be assembled in India using kits imported from Vietnam. This has driven VinFast towards a more localised product strategy.

Instead of taking an existing international model and attempting to make it affordable for India, the company wants to work with Indian suppliers from the early stages of vehicle development. This should give the company a better understanding of component costs and enable the vehicles to be engineered around locally available parts and manufacturing capabilities. The strategy is particularly significant in India's mass-market EV segment, where pricing remains one of the biggest factors influencing buyers.

VinFast VF X: What Is Known So Far?

Among the two upcoming India-specific EVs, VF X is currently the better-known project.
VinFast reportedly wants the VF X to become an entry-level electric vehicle for India, with a targeted price of below $12,000. At current exchange rates, this generally translates to around ₹10 lakh before considering Indian taxes, duties, local pricing strategy and other costs. Therefore, the reported dollar target should not be treated as an official Indian ex-showroom price.

Expected positioning

The VF X is expected to be positioned:

  • Below the current VF 6 in VinFast's range
  • As an affordable entry-level EV
  • For India's price-sensitive market
  • With a stronger focus on local sourcing
  • Around a size suitable for Indian urban and family use

Various reports suggest that the vehicle is expected to be smaller than the VF 6 but slightly larger than the VF 3. This is an important distinction because the company appears to be looking for a balance between compact dimensions and useful cabin space rather than simply producing a very small city EV.

When Will VinFast VF X and VF Y Launch in India?

There is currently no confirmed launch date for either the VF X or VF Y. The projects are still in the early development stage, and VinFast has not announced a production timeline. The company has also not revealed whether both models will launch together or arrive at different times. Since the vehicles are still being evaluated, it would be risky to assign a 2027 or 2028 launch date without official confirmation. For now, the correct description is "under development for the Indian market."

Why Could VF X be Important?

The under-$12,000 target would place the VF X in one of India's most competitive EV price categories. Indian manufacturers already have a strong presence in affordable electric cars, particularly Tata Motors, which has established products across several mass-market EV segments. For VinFast, therefore, the challenge will not simply be launching a cheaper EV. The company will need to combine:

  • Competitive pricing
  • Adequate driving range
  • Practical cabin space
  • Localised components
  • Affordable maintenance
  • Reliable charging support
  • Strong after-sales service

The VF X could become the vehicle that determines whether VinFast can move from being a relatively new premium EV brand to a more mainstream player in India.

VinFast VF Y: What Do We Know?

The second vehicle is internally known as the VF Y, but considerably less information is available about it. At present, VinFast has not publicly confirmed the VF Y's, body style, battery capacity, electric motor, driving range, dimensions, seating capacity, price, features, launch timeline, and more. It is confirmed that VF Y is one of the two India-specific EV projects under discussion with local suppliers, but the report does not provide enough information to establish its positioning. Therefore, it would be premature to describe the VF Y as a particular SUV, hatchback or sedan. The company is still evaluating the projects, and even the internal names VF X and VF Y could eventually change before production.

VinFast's $2 Billion India Investment

India remains an important component of VinFast's long-term expansion strategy. The company has committed $2 billion to its Indian operations and wants to develop the country as a manufacturing base not only for domestic sales but also for markets across South Asia, the Middle East and Africa.

The Thoothukudi facility is therefore more than just a factory for the Indian market. VinFast has described it as a potential regional export hub. The company has also received investment approval for the second phase of its Tamil Nadu plant expansion, although specific details such as the additional capacity and investment timeline have not been fully disclosed.

Why Local Suppliers Matter for the VF X and VF Y?

For the new EVs, VinFast reportedly wants to involve Indian suppliers much earlier than it did with its existing models. This approach can have several advantages.

  • Lower component costs: Sourcing more components locally can reduce dependence on imported parts and potentially lower logistics and import-related costs.
  • Better control over vehicle pricing: If suppliers are involved while the vehicle is being designed, VinFast can engineer the vehicle around components that can be produced at competitive prices.
  • Indian-market engineering: A vehicle developed specifically for India can be designed around local road conditions, customer expectations and practical requirements rather than adapting an existing international product.
  • Stronger supply chain: Greater participation from Indian suppliers could also help VinFast establish a deeper domestic ecosystem over time.

It is reported that VinFast executives met around 200 Indian suppliers in August 2026 as part of discussions around the company's plans for the Indian market.

Will the VinFast VF X Be Cheaper Than the VF 6?

The VF X is expected to be significantly more affordable than the VF 6. It is reported that VinFast is targeting a price of below $12,000 for the VF X, while the current VF 6 and VF 7 sit considerably higher in the company's Indian range. However, the exact Indian price cannot yet be confirmed. The reported $12,000 figure is a target mentioned by sources, not an announced Indian ex-showroom price. Therefore, potential buyers should wait for an official announcement before treating any specific price as confirmed.

Why the VF X Could Be More Important Than the VF Y

Although both projects are significant, the VF X could have a more immediate impact on VinFast's Indian ambitions. The company is reportedly targeting a price below $12,000, which would bring it much closer to India's mass-market EV audience. The VF X could therefore serve three purposes:

  • Increase VinFast's addressable customer base
  • Improve production volumes at its Indian facility
  • Help establish VinFast as a mainstream EV manufacturer

The VF Y, meanwhile, could help expand the company's India-specific portfolio further, but its positioning has not yet been revealed.

What This Means for Indian EV Buyers?

The arrival of India-specific VinFast EVs could increase competition in the market. More competition could encourage manufacturers to focus on:

  • Lower EV prices
  • Better range
  • More features
  • Faster charging
  • Longer warranties
  • Improved after-sales support
  • Higher localisation

For consumers, this is potentially positive. However, the real impact will depend on whether VinFast can successfully bring the VF X to market at the targeted price while maintaining sufficient battery range, safety equipment and build quality.

Final Verdict

The VinFast VF X and VF Y represent a major change in VinFast's India strategy.
Instead of simply bringing existing global EVs to India, the company is now looking at vehicles developed specifically around Indian requirements and cost structures. The VF X appears to be the more important of the two projects for now, particularly because of the reported sub-$12,000 target and its planned positioning below the VF 6.

The biggest question will be whether VinFast can turn its India-specific strategy into a genuinely affordable EV without compromising on range, safety and everyday practicality.

For the moment, buyers should treat the VF X and VF Y as upcoming development projects rather than confirmed production cars. Their final specifications, prices and launch schedules are still awaited. If VinFast gets the localisation and pricing equation right, the two models could give the company a much stronger position in India's rapidly expanding EV market.
