TVS Motor Retains Pole Position

TVS Motor Company retained its top spot in India’s electric two-wheeler market in August 2026. As per Vahan retail data, the company recorded 48,873 electric two-wheeler sales in August 2026, up 91% year-over-year. However, the sales were down 12% sequentially from 55,823 units sold in July 2026. TVS Motor recorded 3,56,579 electric two-wheeler sales in January-August 2026, accounting for 26% market share.

TVS’ strong performance was driven by its TVS iQube family and Orbiter EV. TVS has also expanded its iQube family with the launch of 3.1kWh and 4.7kWh variants and the MillionR Edition. TVS claims that the iQube family offers an option for every customer with battery sizes starting from 2.3kWh to 5.3kWh and a claimed IDC range of up to 212km.

Reasons for TVS’ success:
• Wide dealer network
• Family-friendly design (iQube)
• Multiple battery and price options
• Strong brand image
• Growing EV service network
• Launch of variants to cater to different customer segments

Bajaj Auto’s Chetak Crosses 3 Lakh Mark

Bajaj Auto had another successful month in August with its Chetak electric scooter. Bajaj Auto recorded 41,019 electric scooter sales in August 2026, as compared to 12,246 units in August 2025. However, the sequential growth was negative at 11% as sales stood at 45,862 units in July 2026. More importantly, Bajaj Auto recorded 3,05,226 electric two-wheeler sales in January-August 2026. It became the second manufacturer to cross 3 lakh electric two-wheeler sales in calendar year 2026, after TVS Motor.

The Chetak continues to lead the pack for Bajaj Auto, with multiple variants on offer catering to different customer segments. The company has launched several variants of the Chetak from budget to high-end–to capture the value, mainstream and premium EV scooter segments. TVS Motor and Bajaj Auto’s combined market share stands at 48% for January-August 2026. This clearly shows the shift in power dynamics in India’s electric two-wheeler market.

Ather Energy Maintains Third Spot

Ather Energy maintained its third-place finisher position in January-August 2026 as an electric two-wheeler manufacturer. Ather recorded 28,708 units in August 2026, as compared to 19,210 units in August 2025. Ather’s growth rate was 49% YoY. However, it recorded a 6% sequential dip as compared to July’s 30,636 units. Ather’s electric two-wheeler sales stood at 2,29,099 units in January-August 2026, up 83% YoY.

It continues to be a major player in the electric two-wheeler space with diverse models on offer, including the Rizta, 450S, 450X and 450 Apex. Ather has also launched the Ather Konarc to target the entry-level EV segment. The company’s aggressive expansion plans and product strategy have borne fruit, with visible improvement in its market share.

VIDA Witnesses Strong Growth

Hero MotoCorp’s entry into the electric vehicle space through its VIDA brand has paid off. It recorded 18,978 electric two-wheeler sales in August 2026, up 38% YoY. However, it witnessed a 17% sequential dip to 22,989 units sold in July 2026. VIDA’s electric two-wheeler sales stood at 1,48,069 units in January-August 2026, up 151% YoY. Consequently, its market share has risen to around 11% in January-August 2026, compared to 7% in the same period last year.

VIDA’s aggressive pricing strategy and product mix, which includes the VX2 Go and VX2 Plus, along with its battery-as-a-service business model, appear to have worked in winning over customers. It continues to be a price-compliant EV brand with attractive pricing and a compelling battery-swapping proposition for mainstream buyers.

Ola Electric’s Market Share Falls

Ola Electric remains one of the major electric scooter manufacturers in India. However, its market share has come under pressure in the past few months. Ola Electric’s electric two-wheeler sales stood at 94,307 units in January-August 2026, making it the fifth-largest manufacturer in the Vahan data. As per the Vahan data, Ola Electric recorded 10,400 electric scooter sales as of August 26, 2026. It recorded a 7.1% share of the electric two-wheeler market as of August 26, 2026.

The fall in Ola Electric’s market share is among the most talked-about themes in India’s electric scooter market. It comes as no surprise that Ola Electric is witnessing the most significant competition from other established two-wheeler manufacturers, including TVS Motor and Bajaj Auto. While Ola Electric continues to target multiple segments, including the mainstream, it has announced several new models for the 2026 festive season. Its ability to retain its position as the number two EV brand will be tested in the coming months.

Market Share of Electric Scooter Manufacturers as on August 2026

The table given below indicates the dramatic changes in India’s electric scooter market.

Manufacturer Aug, 2026 Registrations Share
TVS Motor 40,349 27.5%
Bajaj Auto 33,422 22.8%
Ather Energy 23,542 16.0%
Hero VIDA 14,388 9.8%
Ola Electric 10,400 7.1%
Others 24,669 16.8%

These are tentative sales figures for August, 2026. As mentioned above, the final Vahan-based data indicated that TVS Motor, Bajaj Auto, Ather Energy and VIDA accounted for 10,38,973 electric two-wheeler sales in January-August 2026, compared to 13,60,000 electric two-wheelers sold in total.

Electric Scooter Sales August 2026: Did Sales Decrease?

Yes, but it is important to mention that July 2026 was an extraordinary month for India’s electric two-wheeler market. Data indicates that India registered 2,05,622 electric two-wheeler sales in July 2026, the highest monthly sales recorded so far this year. As compared to 2,05,622 units sold in July 2026, India recorded 1,74,366 electric two-wheeler sales in August 2026. Electric two-wheeler sales dipped sequentially in August 2026.

However, the overall trend indicates that sales growth for the first eight months of 2026 continues to be robust compared to the same period last year. Several factors contribute to the demand for electric scooters, including the availability of affordable models, diverse choice of EVs, charging infrastructure, lower running costs, battery-as-a-service proposition, government support in the form of PM E-DRIVE scheme, and more. However, the upcoming months are expected to set a new benchmark for electric scooter sales.

Conclusion

There are three key takeaways from the latest sales data on India’s electric scooter market.

Firstly, electric two-wheelers are crossing into the mainstream. As per Vahan data, India has sold 13.6 lakh electric two-wheelers in the first eight months of 2026. Secondly, traditional two-wheeler manufacturers are gaining in strength. Established majors like TVS Motor, Bajaj Auto, Ather Energy and VIDA have together recorded 76% of India’s electric two-wheeler sales in January-August 2026. Thirdly, 2026 could witness 20 lakh plus sales of electric two-wheelers in India.  India’s electric two-wheeler market will cross the 2-million unit sales mark in 2026.

The market is currently 8,39,025 units away from the 20-lakh mark as of early September 2026. If the current sales momentum persists through the festive season, India’s electric vehicle market will cross this crucial sales threshold this year. In fact, there is every likelihood that India’s electric scooter market will witness another record-breaking year in 2026. The subsequent months will indicate whether India’s electric scooter market will sustain this growth trajectory and whether TVS Motor and Bajaj Auto will continue to dominate the market.
