BYD DM-i Super Plug-in Hybrid Technology Explained | India Launch by End 2026.
The Chinese manufacturer, BYD has introduced its all-new ‘DM-i Super Plug-in Hybrid EV’ technology in India. The BYD Seal U will be the first model to feature this ultra-efficient PHEV system in India by the end of 2026, diversifying BYD’s lineup in India beyond all-electric models. BYD has also termed it as Most advanced plug-in hybrid technologies in recent times.
BYD DM-i Super Plug-in Hybrid EV Technology: What is it?
Like most of the PHEV powertrains, the BYD’s DM-i Super Plug-in Hybrid EV technology includes a blend of battery-motor integration and a combustion engine, with the powertrain using the electric as a mainstream source of power.
AdvertisementIt comes equipped with a 1.5-litre direct injection, turbo-petrol engine integrated with dual electric motors and 18.3 kWh battery pack. According to BYD, this new technology will provide the world's best thermal efficiency of 43.04% for this hybrid setup, and will consume 4.8 litres of petrol per 100 Km.

The company has also claimed that electric motors will provide 97.5% of efficiency. As per BYD, this hybrid combination can together provide a significant driving range of 1200 Km.
How does this Hybrid Technology Work?
When the battery is fully charged, it can be driven purely on EV mode with a distance of up to 200 Km. In day-to-day driving conditions, the system derives complete power from the electric motors, with the petrol engine acting as a starter-generator in order to keep the Blade battery recharged, much like working as a range extender unit in a series hybrid system.
But when the car requires high power, then the petrol engine comes to life and directly powers the wheel to generate enough torque required to move the car seamlessly.

One of the best features of this system is that it automatically detects and smartly switches between pure EV and parallel hybrid modes, thus eradicating the need of the driver to manually change the modes. This hybrid system also comes with V2L capabilities, which means the system can act as a power source to operate other electrical appliances.
