Chinese EV Maker BYD is setting up new benchmarks in EV industry as it has claimed to become Nurburgring Nordschleife’s fastest production EV record with the Yangwang U9 Xtreme, which has registered a lap time of 6 minutes and 59.157 seconds around the 20.8 Km circuit.

This is the latest feat of records achieved by Yangwang U9, as the all-electric hypercar’s dedicated track edition has also set some iconic records as the highest top speed achieved by any EV, rated at 472.41 kph, back in the month of August.

BYD Yangwang U9 Xtreme Nurburgring Lap Time Achievements

Yangwang U9 Xtreme’s iconic lap time of 6:59.157 around the Nordschleife is precisely 5.8 seconds faster than the Xiaomi’s all-electric SU7 Ultra Sedan powered by a True Package. The SU7 Ultra generated a peak power of 1,548 HP and recorded a lap time of 7:04.957 around the Nurburgring in June, defeating the 1,914 HP powered Rimac Nevera Hypercar.

Yangwang, one of the BYD’s premium sub-brand set this record with the help of GT4, GT3, and LMP3 driver Mortiz Kranz, which has won more than 60 races has maneuvered the U9 Xtreme around the Nurburgring Nordschleife.

The company was heavily testing the U9 at the Nordschleife from June 2024, analysing the race track and collecting valuable data to make it snag the fastest production EV record.

If we look at the fastest production car around the Nurburgring Nordschleife overall, then the ICE powered Mercedes-AMG One continues to dominate the position of Number one, all thanks to its impressive lap time of 6:29.09. The U9 Xtreme is just half a second slower than the Mercedes hypercar generating around 1,063 HP of peak performance.

Interestingly, the U9 Xtreme’s Nurburgring lap time gives a stiff competition to the likes of Lamborghini Aventador SV and Manthey Kit-powered Porsche 911 GT3, both of which are less powerful if we compare the lap times.

BYD Yangwang U9 Xtreme Performance & Power

The U9 Xtreme houses a 80 kWh LFP battery pack integrated with a quad-motor setup, with the motor mounted on each wheel. These motors can reach up to a whopping 30,000 RPM and generate a thundering power of 3,000 HP. This is even double the power of the regular Yangwang U9, which makes around 1,305 HP.

The Xtreme badging justifies this immense amount of power this hypercar produces, as the Yangwang U9 which broke the Nurburgring lap record is basically an upgraded version of the original standard model.

Apart from the power addition, the U9 Xtreme also incorporates an efficient cooling system, specific enhancements for the DiSus-X body control system, titanium-alloy carbon ceramic brakes, and GitiSport semi-slick tyres.

There is also an addition of a huge wing which is present at the back for providing extra downforce, which was not present at the ‘Track Edition’ of the Yangwang U9 that holds the title of EV top speed record.
