Mercedes is assessing the possibility of an electric AMG GT sports car.

Mercedes has hinted at the possibility of an electric version of its two-door GT sportscar. This was confirmed by Mercedes AMG CEO Michael Schiebe, who expressed his views on the 2025 Munich Motor Show, “The big question arises now is whether there’s a market big enough to justify this big investment, specifically from the technology point of view, we know how to achieve it.”
If it enters into production, the electric GT would be sold alongside the internal combustion engine powered AMG GT, which the company has continued to invest into the next decade, thus offering multiple powertrain options for customers. AMG also revealed their highest production all-electric model GT XX concept, which is an exclusive 4-door performance vehicle set to be introduced in 2026.
New AMG GT EV Expected Launch
The current version of the Mercedes AMG GT on sale is considered as a secondary car and is bought by consumers who love driving behind the wheel and its electric counterpart would be catering to the same audience by showcasing the performance division’s boss.
However, Mercedes has not decided the exact launch timeline of the upcoming sportscar, which indicates a market launch soon if the interest for performance electric cars rises in the span of a few years.
The AMG Boss further expressed that, “Currently, we are analysing the needs of the consumers and due to our deep research of the market, we are successful with our internal combustion engine powered GT two-door EV, so we will be focussing on that first and then we will analyse the right point to introduce the two-door EV.
Schiebe further expressed that Mercedes AMG registered more success in underpinning the combustion-engined architecture as compared to the electric version. He said, “Sometimes we manufacture a car which doesn’t fulfill our expectations and is not profitable, but we engineer it to enhance the performance of the brand.”
He also provided specific hints of the two-door EV arriving as a Halo car, in spite of the commercial viability. However back in 2012, Mercedes also showcased the electric model of AMG SLS, which also registered a EV lap record at the Nurburgring, but when launched, it registered low sales volume resulting in discontinuation in a few years without its next generation model.
