The next-gen Mercedes A-Class is expected to come with electric powertrains, along with a choice of ICE.

Mercedes has planned to introduce next-generation A-Class hatchback, as the company is developing a luxury hatchback, which will be taking the place of existing A-Class, scheduled for generation update in 2028.
This strategic move has surprised everyone as the German manufacturer’s recent product strategy focuses on bringing more expensive models in its lineup. Mercedes also extended the launch of the fourth generation A-Class hatchback to 2028 due to global dealer pressure, followed by the constant demand, A-Class is generating.
Mercedes A-Class hatchback Replacement Details
The new hatchback will be sold with diverse powertrain options including electric and ICE powertrains, thus in order to compete with rivals like BMW 1 series and the Audi A3 hatchback. The electric version of A-Class will be going against the likes of Volkswagen ID. Golf, as the platform is developed with a flexibility to accommodate ICE and EV powertrains.
Mercedes has smartly invested in this platform as they don’t have to develop a specific platform to develop the EVs, thus saving huge marginal costs.
Mercedes A-Class Expected Design
The design of Mercedes's upcoming hatchback is currently not revealed and is under wraps. According to suggestions from various insiders, the traditional design of the hatchback will be retained, with dimensions and track width to remain unchanged and will be similar to the upcoming third-gen CLA.
The A-Class hatchback replacement will be underpinned on Mercedes’s completely new MMA platform, which powers various models such as CLA sedan, CLA estate, and the upcoming GLA and GLB SUVs. This upcoming hatchback will be the fifth bodystyle five-door model in the Mercedes lineup to utilize this platform.
Mercedes has implemented this strategy after reports of a significant decline of global sales by 6%, followed by a 19% decrease in EV sales. Thus these numbers have created a shift in Mercedes approach by changing their recent model strategy made by the CEO of Mercedes Ola Kallenius, which was earlier focussed on high-performance luxury vehicles.
In India, the A-Class hatchback is currently sold with AMG powertrains, followed by an A-Class limousine sedan as an alternative.
