Volkswagen is revising its strategy for introducing the names for their all-electric vehicles, as the German manufacturer is all set to bring their traditional popular nameplates for defining their all-electric lineup. Going by this, VW’s latest ID.2 all electric city car concept is set to be introduced in the Indian markets in 2026, branding as ID.Polo EV, and the ID.GTI concept will commence production as the ID.Polo GTI.

Both the models are undergoing development phase and will be displayed next month at the Munich Motor Show. Thus we can say that electric powertrains are ensuring the revival of legendary old models by introducing them in their electric lineup.

But at the same time it raises one important question: do these old nameplates or reusing legacy badges is the only solution left with manufacturers instead of launching new models with advanced technology?

However, Volkswagen has announced that they will be utilizing popular names for their electric lineup, and the inaugural vehicle for the company will be the ID.Polo, followed by more established nameplates to be powered by electric power, thus rebuilding their whole lineup.

The CEO of Volkswagen, Thomas Schafer expressed her views on this and said, “Our popular model names still echo in the minds of consumers, as they appreciate quality and powerful brands which feature advanced technology, reliability and ageless design. That’s why we are utilizing our recognised names into our electric powertrains, with ID.Polo being our first inaugural vehicle.”

Volkswagen ID.Polo and ID.Polo GTI share the same Platform.

The electric Polo will be underpinned by the company’s MEB Entry architecture, which will be also utilized by ID.Every1 concept and the upcoming ID.Cross, which is the electric version of the T-Cross. The platform will be integrating two battery pack options, with the substantially larger battery pack to provide a WLTP range of up to 450 Km on a single charge.

However, Volkswagen will be restricting the ID.Polo and ID.Polo GTI with a front-wheel drive option, which incorporates a single electric motor mounted on the front. The company has not disclosed the power figures but it is expected that the sportier GTI variant could generate power of around 220 Bhp.

The upcoming next-generation all-electric Polo will be exactly the same as the concepts featuring sleek LED headlamps and taillights. Other expected Visual changes includes flared wheel arches integrated with big imposing alloy wheels, a front diffuser, and big spoilers attached to the hatchback complimented by a sportier rear bumper.

The interiors will be designed with a minimalist yet clean look which is expected to house a 12.9-inch infotainment display, followed by a 10.9-inch digital driver’s display integrated with physician buttons. The company will be soon updating about the official prices and is expected to be priced under 25 Lakhs.
