Skoda is all set to enter the Indian EV industry by launching its first electric SUV in India, the Enyaq iV. It was slated to launch in 2024, but due to technical difficulties, the launch was delayed. The director of India’s brand director, Petr Janeba has also confirmed the arrival of their first electric SUV by September.
Skoda Electric SUV: What’s the Current Update
As it’s confirmed that Skoda is launching its SUV this year, but Skoda has not clarified about the confirmation of Enyaq iV, which was making rumors about launching way back in 2023, but will be the first EV of the company.
The Enyaq was also spied a couple of times at the Bharat Mobility Auto Expo, and also been spied testing on Indian roads on several occasions. The company has also launched a mid-lifecycle facelift at the international markets, among other visual changes.
Skoda is clearly strategizing their first EV launch in India and updating the infrastructure to meet the rising demands of EV users.
Platform
Skoda will be constructing Elyaq on the company’s recognized MEB platform, as the Elroq and Enyaq coupe are also based on this platform. However they have still not decided which car to bring in India that can attract customers and increase the brand’s reputation in the EV industry.
The Import duties on cars are also expensive, as 70-100 percent duty is applied for the import of each car. So if the company wants to invest in India’s EV mobility in the future, then they have to spend at least Rs 4,150 Crores for setting and running a completely redesigned EV plant.
Skoda is waiting for the revised EV policies as the Central government will be drafting the updated policies by March 2025, by discussing with the stakeholders. Meanwhile, the company has also started looking for localised India specific EV-platforms on which Skoda can design future EV cars for India.
The Elroq is 4.49 meters long and was revealed in late October last year and is comparatively smaller than the Enyaq which is 4.65 meters long. Skoda will be analyzing the market and will take the decision regarding which segment can appeal more to the users.
