Skoda Auto Volkswagen India Pvt Ltd (SAVWIPL) are having various plannings and discussions with the JSW Group in order to form a strategic equity partnership which will be aimed at manufacturing and developing the next-generation SUV lineup, which will be underpinned on the CMP21 platform.

If the discussions are finalized into a strategic alliance, then it could open an array of growth opportunities for Skoda-VW in India, thus striking a perfect balance between VW’s advanced technology, followed by JSW’s financial and industrial prowess.

Volkswagen Group’s India Vision

The Indian subsidiary of Volkswagen Group has refused to utilise the expensive MQB A0 37 platform and has replaced it with the more accessible and cost-effective CMP21 architecture, which is expected to underpin a variety of powertrains such as internal combustions, hybrid and electric SUVs.

However, the estimated cost of the project has exceeded Euro 1 billion (over Rs 1,026 Crore), and VW Group has confirmed that Skoda-VW India should bring on-board a local equity partner which could share the financial burden and help in gaining project approvals.

The VW Group had initial discussions with Mahindra & Mahindra, which had talks to take them in as a logical partner, given its automotive excellence.

However, the discussions yield no result as there were divergent strategic priorities and various disagreements. Now the JSW Group, which is setting huge ambitions in the Indian automotive market and is also an equity partner in JSW-MG India, has been selected by the VW Group as the new preferred alliance.

The Global CEO of Skoda Auto, Klaus Zellmer has expressed his views on this and said, “We are looking forward to having a strategic alliance with a local partner in order to combine cultural alignment with similar business vision. The train is yet to leave the station.”

Possibilities of a Skoda-VW and JSW collaboration.

The development of the CMP21 platform is going on, however still not receiving the green signal, in order to avoid potential delays for the planned mid-2027 launch. Thus a successful partnership with JSW is very important in reigniting Skoda-VW’s sales amid India’s accelerating transition to electrification and the evolving automotive industry of the country.

Looking at the broader industry context, The Skoda-VW and JSW discussions are reflecting the importance of how international manufacturers are getting dependent on strategic local alliances in order to reduce the level of risk, allowing seamless market penetration, and eradicating market complexities.

This will result in a constant growth in the Indian market, which stands as the third largest automotive market in the world.
