Toyota, after fifteen years of launching their first hybrid car, and setting standards in the hybrid technology are all set to enter India's EV  market. The company is planning to launch the all-new Urban BEV, which was displayed in Europe, last year in December.

Toyota will be following the same strategy, as it will be launching the rebadged version of Maruti Suzuki, just like the previous Urban Cruiser sold in India. However, the car was the replica of a petrol SUV, derived from Vitara Brezza, but this new launch will be a pure electric model based on the e-Vitara.

Toyota can rename it with a new catchy name in the Indian market to ensure that the customers don’t get confused with the old one, however, there is no confirmation from the Japanese manufacturer.

In the international markets, the all-new Toyota Urban cruiser BEV measures 4,285 mm in length, 1,800 mm in width, and 1,635 mm in height. The wheelbase is around 2,700 mm. It is expected that the Indian model is likely to have the same dimensions.

 Powertrain Options

In Europe, Toyota offers the electric model in three powertrain options. The base variant gets a 49 kWh LFP battery pack, powered by a 106 kW (142 Bhp)/189 Nm motor in the front. The middle variant is powered by the same motor, but with a bigger 61 kWh LFP battery pack.

The top variant gets two motors generating 135 kW (181 Hp) of peak power and 300 Nm of maximum torque. Toyota will be selling only the base and middle variants in India, and the expected range is around 500 km.

The all-new Urban Cruiser can get a variety of features such as 18-inch alloy wheels, a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster, a 10.25-inch touchscreen information display, ventilated seats, 10-Way power driver’s seat, sliding and reclining rear seats, seven airbags, and Level 2 ADAS functions.

Expected Launch

Toyota Kirloskar Motor (TKM) may launch the all-new Urban Cruiser electric SUV in mid-2025. The company will be locally manufacturing it from Maruti Suzuki’s plant in Hansalpur, Gujarat. We expect it to be priced between Rs 15 to Rs 17 Lakh (Ex-Showroom).
