India’s rapid surge of demand in EVs has entered into a new dimension of EV transition, as EVs are registering record monthly sales, thus shifting the industry’s focus to a massive scale. This has also raised an important question as to whether the EV infrastructure is able to make ownership affordable, reliable and convenient at the same time.

World EV Day 2026: EVs are the New Trend

If we look at the recent trends, the country has recorded its highest-ever monthly EV retails sales in July, with 3,27,901 units sold, which is an increase of more than 66% as compared to the previous year, as stated by Federation of Automobile Dealers Association (FADA), which is nearly one in every eight vehicles sold during the month was electric.

The July record has been carried over forward with a strong momentum in August, as according to FADA data, the industry executives showed 2,98,448 EVs retailed during the month, which is up by 52.9% as compared to the last year, with EV penetration reaching 12.3%, as compared to 9.5% earlier.

These numbers showcase the importance of World EV Day 2026, which is celebrated on September 9 under the theme ‘Switching Electric: Reducing the Cost of Motoring’. The campaign is promoting the mainstream use of EVs in everyday commuting by putting affordability and economics of EV ownership at the center of the transition.

This massive shift in focus reflects a big change in the Indian EV market. For early adopters, the main reason to switch for EVs was mainly due to the emissions, technology, and government incentives. But now for the mass market, the calculation is quite simple:

  • How much does an EV cost to run?
  • How much does it cost to buy and maintain?
  • Can the owner depend on it everyday?

If we look at the July sales numbers, they are heavily in the favour of EVs as electric two-wheelers are the largest contributor to the growth, with sales crossing 2 lakh units for the first time. The passenger EV sales showed a spike of 83% year on year to 32,928 units, while electric commercial vehicle sales also showed a strong demand as fleet operators are transitioning to electric mobility.
