The world is going through an electric revolution and soon electric mobility will be the primary face of transportation, however, there are certain challenges that are pretty much evident while embracing electric transportation.

One of which is the Range Anxiety which haunts an EV buyer, to solve this, multiple companies are coming with their new technological solutions. Following the process, German Automotive supplier ZF is working on a new technology.

In 2026, the company will roll out an innovative electric range extender system, in order to eradicate Range anxiety. Thus there will be an integration of internal combustion engines and batteries to regenerate power. Let’s understand how this technology works.

What is a Range Extender System?

The Range Extender system converts a traditional EV car into a hybrid without it truly driving the wheels. This technology uses a small petrol engine which plays the role of generator that generates energy by recharging the batteries of your EV, when you need.

This technology is completely the opposite of Plug-in Hybrids, where the engine can pull the vehicle as well as charge the batteries. In Range extender technology, the engines are used continuously at optimal speeds for an enhanced fuel economy and reduced carbon emissions.

This technology is not completely state of the art or a new innovation as cars like BMW i3 have used the same technology in their powertrains. ZF is quite confident that this technology still has a demand, in spite of the fact that new modern EVs come with more than 500 Km of range on a single charge.

The company has analysed the market and has witnessed that many buyers still have “Range Anxiety” especially in places with limited charging infrastructure.

Potential Benefits of Range Extender Systems

According to ZF, the range extender systems have numerous benefits such as they are quite economical to maintain, easy to design, and have less complicated systems.

The best part of the Range extender system is that the petrol engine is not connected to the wheels, so they will be used specifically for producing electricity, making the whole process efficient and reliable.

ZF Range Extender: Two Unique Editions

ZF will be providing the Range Extender System with two variants to choose from: eRE and eRE+. Let’s understand the basic difference between the two variants.

eRE: In the eRE variant, you'll find an electric motor and converter that work together with a planetary gearset.

eRE+: The eRE variant comes with an additional intelligent clutch and differential, which gives it the flexibility to work either as a generator producing energy or as a secondary powertrain to the electric car.

POWER: The power generated by two variants is quite different and is designed to cater different customer needs. The eRE generates power between 93 and 147 Hp, while the eRE+ is for even more performance enthusiasts, generating a peak power of 201 Hp.

ZF’s efforts in this technology is quite praiseworthy as they are addressing the problem to a main issue i.e. Range anxiety and providing a proper solution for it. Their strategy for bringing back range extenders is taking electric mobility to unprecedented levels.

Instead of Solid State Batteries and other costly measures, these systems offer a blend of reliability and efficiency, especially for vehicles which are completely electric.
