Alfen N.V. has announced their partnership with CATL to develop 5 GWh of CATL’s advanced sodium-ion battery energy storage system across Europe. This brings the partnership of two big companies to a new level.

This will foster a development powered by technology that supports Europe's energy transition. At the start of this strategic alliance, Alfen and CATL jointly worked on the development of lithium-ion energy projects. Since 2023, the two companies have a long-term battery supply collaboration which expanded in 2024 to meet Alfen's growing demand for energy storage in Europe.

This joint partnership aims on developing low-cost energy storage solutions, which will create new business opportunities beyond conventional lithium-ion battery storage supply. It further helps Alfen to expand its battery material portfolio and can further lower the cost of energy storage products.

The CEO of Alfen, Michael Colijin, expressed his views on this and said, “Sodium Ion is the next big step towards energy storage, which is more reliable, diverse and advanced for the evolving market. Thus our big vision with CATL puts us ahead of the competition.”

These two companies will be leading the large-scale adoption of sodium-ion energy storage across Europe and will support the growing energy transition and renewable integration, opening diverse market opportunities for clean-energy.
