Tata might soon introduce the Altroz EV as the car is under development for a while. The car was first displayed as a concept version at the 2019 Geneva motor show, and then was revealed in a production form at Auto Expo 2020. Tata has indeed verified that the Altroz EV is currently being developed and is referred to as Ascot.

Why is the Altroz EV launch delayed?

From multiple reports, it appears that Tata encountered major hurdles in 2021 in the process of developing the Altroz EV. This vehicle was crucial for Tata, as it was set to be their second electric car, following the Nexon EV.

However, the company was facing challenges in fitting the battery pack under the floor, as it was quite tough to accommodate the batteries in a low-slung Altroz which has a normal ground clearance of 165 mm and was reduced to just 145 mm after attaching the batteries, creating a difference of 20 mm which is quite substantial and may affect the overall performance of the car.

The company also cannot increase the ground clearance as this could destroy the original stance of the car and make it appear like a crossover, thus changing the original design of the car. The MD of Tata Motors had clarified at the start of the year that Altroz EV could be arriving sometime this year, after the Harrier EV and Sierra EV. However, it seems like Altroz EV will be delayed further than the expected timeline of launch.

Tata Altroz EV to share platform with Punch EV

The Altroz EV could be based on the same Acti.EV architecture based on the Punch EV. Tata is gearing up to launch the facelift of the Punch EV by this year’s festive season and will witness a mid cycle update for the petrol Punch, along with that the Punch EV will also receive major structural updates to make it capable of housing a bigger battery pack.

The revamped Punch is anticipated to feature an enhanced EV architecture designed to support a significantly larger battery pack.

Tata is seriously considering the feedback of users who love small EVs and use it for inter-city commutes and longer highway drives, which has increased the demand for a bigger battery for Punch EV as it will provide significantly longer range and seamless accessibility.

Revamped Acti.EV Architecture

The Punch EV, featuring the brand's revamped Acti.EV architecture could signify that Tata has successfully resolved the issue of battery packaging, especially the bigger battery. It is expected that the Altroz EV could be powered by the same set of powertrain options as the Punch EV which gets a 25 kWh battery pack and 35 kWh battery pack, offering a significant range of 265 Km and 365 Km on a single charge.

However, Altroz EV could be positioned in the same segment as the Punch EV and has the chance to overlap in the prices, providing a variety of choice among the users according to different needs and preferences, which will be helpful in consuming each other's sales figures.
