India Introduces Its First Portable Petrol-Powered EV Charger to Eliminate Range Anxiety Concerns

Range Anxiety is one of the biggest challenges which stops many users to buy EVs specifically for long distance travelling, because the charging infrastructure on Indian roads is still not developed. 

So in order to solve this problem, Rebel Power has introduced its exclusive 5 kVA petrol-powered EV charger so that EV owners can travel long distances with their EVs without thinking about range issues. 

Rebel Power India 5 kVA EV Charger Technical Details 

It is a petrol-powered generator, not a charger, thus it has been developed as an emergency off-grid power backup for electric vehicle owners. The main objective of this charger is to eradicate range anxiety during long-distance travel. It can be also widely used for roadside assistance (RSA) teams, fleet operators, and highway breakdown patrols. 

The company has stated that it can fully charge a 30 kWh EV battery in 7.5 hours as it uses inverter technology with a claimed THD of below 2% in order to provide pure sine wave power. It also comprises 6-litre petrol tank that offer 5 hours of constant usage with a fuel consumption of approximately 1.3 litres per hour. 

The gross weight of this charger is 27 Kg and can be easily stored in a boot. It also comes with a 2-year manufacturer warranty. For charging, the generator requires a neutral-ground bond or suitable earthing settings for the EV to build a safe electrical connection.

India's first portable 5kVA EV charger 

This charger is currently available online for a price of Rs 63,499. The RP EV-C50i is a single phase portable generator that has a maximum capacity of 5,000 Watts (5 kVA) with a constant 19A AC current output. The generator can be connected to modern 3-wheelers and 4-wheeler EVs using the standard Type-2 portable charger. 

Should all EV owners buy it?

This petrol-powered generator could look irreverent to many consumers, but it is mainly designed for those EV owners who frequently do outstation trips, long highway journeys and travel to remote locations where there is no electricity and charging infrastructure. 

However, it is not reasonable for all EV owners as most electric users who live in metropolitan areas don’t need this kind of charger or generator. Apart from EV owners, it is very useful for Road Side Assistance (RSA) fleet operators.
