EV Car Sales in September 2026: 35,866 Electric Cars Registered, Up 93% YoY
India reported a significant rise in electric passenger-car sales in September 2026, with 35,866 electric cars registered for the month, according to the latest Vahan-based data. The sales number shows a 93% year-on-year increase from 18,537 EV registrations in September 2025, making September 2026 the best month recorded so far.
Established manufacturers reported the most significant gains, with Tata Motors registering 14,729 electric cars and leading the pack by a considerable margin. Mahindra came in at a distant second with 7,744 electric cars, followed by JSW MG with 5,226 electric car registrations. Altogether, the top three manufacturers accounted for roughly 77% of electric passenger-car registrations in September 2026.

VinFast also reported a significant 2,962 EV registrations, placing itself ahead of Kia in the September data. Kia reported 1,256 electric cars, with its EV range adding to its presence in the segment. The upcoming festive months are expected to boost vehicle demand, with new launches, offers and increased festive spending set to support EV sales. The figures represent Vahan-based registrations, not manufacturer dispatches or wholesale sales, and the numbers can change dramatically as pending registrations are added.
